A team of three UK bartenders went bungee-jumping to celebrate winning the fifth 42 Below Cocktail World Cup after five days of cocktail making in Queenstown, New Zealand. The master mixologists from Mahiki, Lab and Stanza, competed against 14 other teams and took away the top honour with their Ale of Two Cities, a cocktail inspired by the Classic English pint. The cocktail, containing Feijoaflavoured vodka, vermouth, apple juice, nettle cordial, malt syrup, and freshly squeezed lime juice, was served with chips.

Champagne Jacquart has signed up to sponsor this year’s Art London exhibition, taking place October 2–6. Now in its 10th year, Art London draws in more than 15,000 celebrities, collectors and art lovers to the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Jacquart will be served in the Champagne Bar, as well as at the exhibition preview and private charity functions
While football-playing countries around the globe are working hard to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, tournament host South Africa is investing in training of another kind. Wines of South Africa (WoSA) is on a mission to train 2,010 wine waiters and sommeliers in time for the World Cup’s first game. The marketing body is collaborating with the wine industry there to raise funds for a training programme, designed to improve wine service for consumers and tourists.
Wines from Rioja’s series of Grazia Girls’ Guide to Rioja evenings got off to a stylish start at Harvey Nichols, London last week when Susy Atkins hosted a tasting of seven Rioja wines to an audience of 100 eager fashionistas on 17 September. Tickets for the £20-per head meal and wine tasting event sold out within a day of going on sale on the www.winesfromrioja.co.uk website, after being promoted in Grazia. Tickets are also sold out for subsequent events at Harvey Nichols restaurants in Edinburgh and Manchester on the 1 and 8 October.
Steve Perez, chairman of Global Brands, finished a very respectable fourth, in this year’s gruelling Incas Rally held in Peru from September 11 - 21. The rally, which is made up of five legs, totals a staggering 2,700 kilometres over a period of five weeks, is a major highlight within the rallying calendar and one of the most prestigious in the world. Perez completed the race in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9, which has recently been given a make-over – now sporting the branding of ‘Kick Energy, Global Brands’ energy drink product.
