Greene King reduces wine and beer prices

Monday, 01 September 2008

Greene King is investing £1 million in a cut-price drinks promotion in 200 of its pubs.

The promotion, which will run until the end of November, will see bottles of Pinot Grigio and Merlot sold at £5.95 and £6.95, McEwans lager sold at £1.95 a pint and Ruddles bitter at £2.25. The venture is being funded entirely by Greene King.

The company said the price cuts are in response to the "Aldi" effect, where consumers are increasingly looking for cheaper deals because of the credit crunch, as well as being designed to help licensees who have been hit by the effects of the bad weather, the smoking ban and price discounting from managed houses.

David Elliott, managing director of Greene King's Pub Partners, said: "We recognise that many people who want to go for a pint or a glass of wine do at times want a value choice and we have made this available."

The promotion will run until the end of November and pontentially from January to March next year.

I think a lot of licensees are annoyed by the fact that Greene King only offered its last dicount to its managed pubs - it's about time it gave its tennanted pubs the same sort of deal. Too little too late though for many that are struggling?
