Friday, 12 September 2008
Online off-licence TheDrinkShop.com has set in place new age verification checks which check customer's details against the electoral roll, BT and credit reference agency databases before allowing them to purchase from the site.

The company claims the system is "the most advanced degree of checking" in the distance retailing sector of the drinks industry.

The programme has been integrated into its own software application, WinGo, which is lso responsible for te company's order processing, customer relationship management, management, accounting, despatch, marketing, stock control and site content.

Tim Francis, managing director of TheDrinkShop.com, said: "The development is one of the most important steps in the company's ten year history. Our controls include interfacing automatically with sources such as the electoral roll, BT and credit reference agency databases.

"The development and maintenance is a substantial investment for us, and we believe that all online drinks retailers and other industries with similar customer age requirements should implement such controls - by law."
